12h – „Jewelry of Ethiopia“ exhibition guided tour
A guided tour through the exhibition Jewelry of Ethiopia will reveal how Austrian money was turned into jewelry, how Ethiopian Christians marked their religious affiliation, which fertility symbols were used throughout history as magical devices, and why the jewelry of Muslim women from the Horn of Africa is more opulent than the decorations of other communities. The tour will be given by the exhibition author and museum curator, Alexandra Prodanovic.
13h Screening of documentary
“Duka’s Dilemma – A visit to Hamar in Southern Ethiopia”, 2001. 87’, English subtitles. Authors: Jean Lydall, Kaira Strecker . The film has received three international movie awards.
Duka is a married woman and mother of five young children, living in Hamar, Southern Ethiopia. Ever since her husband married a beautiful, young, second wife, Duka has been in a state of emotional turmoil... Personal and intimate, the film follows this family in crisis.
The screening is organized in association with the International Festival of Ethnological Film.
A CD with choice Ethiopian music will be given out as a gift to the first three visitors (at 12h)!
