Saturday, June 23rd
10-18h
AFRICAN BAZAAR

The African Bazaar is a popular event of the Museum of African Art, which promotes visual and applied arts from the African continent. It is imagined as a sale exhibition of art and craft objects, such as masks, sculptures in stone and wood, handmade and hand-painted fabrics, paintings, batiks, jewellery and decorative household objects.

12-17h
Art Workshop: AFRICAN MOTIFS IN NEEDLEWORK TECHNIQUE

The theme of this year’s Afro festival is Needlework. We are inviting you to take part in workshops through which you will discover the history and cultural meaning of different types of needlework in Africa.

In order to understand the meaning and importance of textiles in African cultures, it is necessary to know the symbols which are expressed through visual means. Symbols are almost always closely tied to local knowledge and oral traditions. The general trait of African art – the linking of verbal expression with visual arts – is particularly important for the art of needlework. The pattern or motif often stands for a written word, that is, it transmits messages which are important to the individual, family or community.

Different needlework techniques will be conducted by Vesna Rusić, coordinator of Re:Crafts (Cluster for the Revitalisation of Old Crafts in Serbia) and her associates; Zoltan Varga, master leather worker and founder of Zolika brand); Vera Lajko-Bajac (applied artist).

12-17h
Workshops for Children: SYMBOLS ON AFRICAN TEXTILES, MAKING CLAY OBJECTS, AFRICAN PERCUSSIONS

By engaging in workshops that cover select themes children will learn about symbols that appear on textiles of the Fon people and Filafani textile motifs. Also, they will have the opportunity to learn to model clay objects – in the form of sculptures, relief or as decorative objects of everyday use. Throughout the day Branko Trijic, Djembe course instructor, will organise in intervals, shorter workshops of African percussions.

15-18h
Salsa Y Punto band performance

The Salsa y Punto band, which has influenced the popularity of salsa and afro-Cuban music in Serbia, is made up of Cuban and Serbian musicians: Raul Pulido Sandoval (vocals/marakas/ güiro), Jorge Enrique Rivera Legat (piano/bass/vocals), Roberto Justis Vinales (deuma/bongos/bells), Igor Vincetić (congas), Katarina Jovanović (vocals/ güiro), Vladimir Jovanović (trumpet), Dragan Risteski (trumpet).

DURBAR!

The most important day of the Afro Festival is Durbar: the festival of festivals – day of friendship, music and dance. With the participation of African embassies in Belgrade, in the pleasant exterior of the Museum Garden, this day celebrates African music, dance, art and culture. Carefully arranged stands with art, craft and souvenir objects (textiles, jewellery and sculptures in wood) contribute to the Festival spirit which in an unforgettable way captures the treasures of Africa. With the kind support of the African diplomatic community in Belgrade, visitors are offered the opportunity to enjoy culinary specialities from different parts of Africa: Angola, Algeria, Egypt, Ghana, Guinea, Congo, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia.
