MARRIAGE CUSTOMS IN IGBO CULTURE (NIGERIA)
Sunday, 25 May 2025, 1 p.m.
*the programme is in English
In Igbo culture, marriage traditionally involves a four-step process that a couple must complete before they are considered married. These steps are essential and some are expected to take place before any religious or church wedding can occur. While some families may choose to legalize their union at a courthouse, these traditional rites remain an important cultural requirement. The details of these steps can vary slightly from one Igbo village or community to another, but their core elements and meanings are largely consistent. Through selected images and a short film, our presentation will guide visitors through these stages.
In our presentation “Marriage Customs in Igbo Culture (Nigeria)” we will explore the customs and symbolism that continue to hold cultural significance today, proceeding the wedding day itself—a celebration now often filled with contemporary music, fashion, and personal expression. During and after the talk, we invite you to engage with the visual material and film, offering a deeper appreciation of these enduring traditions.
The presentation is delivered on the occasion of the 25th of May – Africa Day by master’s students from the University of Arts, Belgrade: Idakwo-Kennedy Wendy Chibudom, Nnadi Everestus Chiemezie and Theophilus Howard, current interns of the MAU.
Entrance is free
