MUSEUMS AS BRIDGES OF CULTURE: EGYPTIAN-SERBIAN ENCOUNTERS AT THE MUSEUM OF AFRICAN ART IN BELGRADE
26 Маy - 10 June 2025
As a result of the signed Memorandum of Cooperation between the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) in Cairo and the Museum of African Art (MAA) in Belgrade, the exhibition Museums as Bridges of Culture: Egyptian-Serbian Encounters at the Museum of African Art in Belgrade testifies to the longstanding and diverse commitment to preserving Egyptian cultural heritage through the decades-long work of the Museum of African Art. Presented at NMEC, the exhibition showcases a range of programs, projects, and initiatives developed over more than forty years of MAU's existence, highlighting the presence of Egyptian themes in the museum’s curatorial and educational practices and recalls numerous points of connection that have shaped and strengthened cultural relations between Egypt and Serbia.
The exhibition at NMEC follows the chronological trajectory of Egypt’s presence at MAA — from the 1950s and its “proto-beginnings,” through the institutional development and curatorial formation of the museum, to contemporary exhibitions, publications, and educational formats that reley on the Egyptian cultural heritage themes. In this context, the exhibition not only illuminates historical moments of cooperation and cultural exchange, but also creates space for reflecting on the museum's role as a site of encounter, dialogue, and exchange of knowledge.
This exhibition offers, for the first time, the Egyptian public a detailed overview of the existence and work of the Museum of African Art, as well as its ongoing commitment to the appreciation and preservation of Egyptian cultural heritage—opening a space not only for retrospection, but also for new chapters of collaboration.
The Museum delegation includes Dr. Marija Aleksić, Director, and curators Milica Naumov and Milica Josimov.
The exhibition is organized with the support of the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Cairo and the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Belgrade.
